IMPACT OF CASSAVA PROCESSING INDUSTRY EFFLUENT ON RIVER OGBESE, OGBESE AREA OF ONDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

An investigation of the impact of the effluent from the cassava processing industry on the river water quality of Ogbese River was carried out between July and November, 2009. Water samples from five selected points in the river were analyzed for temperature, conductivity, pH, turbidity, total solids, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, acidity, alkalinity, hardness, calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, DO, BOD, COD, chloride, sulphate, phosphate, nitrate, cyanide, oil and grease. Samples were collected from five points, designated as: Point 1 (Upstream of point of outfall of effluent), Point 2 (Point of outfall of effluent), point 3 (50m downstream of point of outfall of effluent), Point 4 (100m downstream of point of outfall of effluent), Point 5 (200m downstream of point of outfall of effluent). The levels of most of the parameters monitored were generally higher at the point of effluent discharge into the water bodies and dispersed to less malign conditions downstream due to water dilution effect.
